Avro CF-319 Gyrfalcon

Avro Canada took many of the operational lessons learned from the CF-288 Angel and started work on their next-generation fighter.   This included going with two of the 2nd generation Scarlett fusion engines (code-named Gabriel). After several years of research, the 1st prototype flight took place with Avro’s chief test pilot describing it as the fastest and most maneuverable aircraft she had flown. “A pilot’s aircraft” The name Gyrfalcon was selected due to the prototype’s size and straight-line speed being similar to the Gyrfalcon in nature. Designed to operate in the far north in both the interceptor and air superiority role, the CF-319 has long range and highspeed capabilities which enables it to loiter over the assigned area for long periods of time. YF-19 Update June 11th.

Been a very busy and challenging few months.    Life has thrown up a few issues so I took most of the month of May off from the Podcast and from the bench for more than a few moments at a time.   I completed the main assembly and applied that excellent canopy mask from Return 2 Kit Form.  These are great masks and make a time-consuming and annoying task much better.  Next up is priming.  In this case Black Stynylrez primer from Badger.  I had done a base priming coat on the wings earlier in the build process, thinking I might prime/paint them separately. The photo shows just after I applied the last of several light coats. Next is the first of 2 coats of the underside color, AK11888 Light Ghost Grey FS36375 from AK’s Gen 3 Acrylic line.  I used a 50/50 mix with their thinner.  I did forget…

AK Gen 3 Paint Airbrush Thinning Test

I finally found some time to do some tests on AK Gen 3 acrylic paint. I’ve picked several sets up lately to do some future projects in the queue.   I’ve been reading many different opinions and techniques on the best way to airbrush this paint. This paint is listed as acrylic and I think it is more than a true acrylic than some other paint lines like Tamiya which is more of a hybrid. I decided to test several different thinning agents while keeping the other elements as close as possible.  Thinners tested. AK’s Gen 3 Thinner Mr. Color Levelling Thinner Distilled Water Vallejo Airbrush Thinner Vallejo Flow Improver ISO Alcohol 70% In all the tests I’m using a Badger Patriot airbrush which was thoroughly cleaned between tests.
