Hasegawa 1/72 F-18A Part 5

Sometimes life gets in the way of the workbench. It can also distract you a bit too much on the bench. Why do I say this?  Stay tuned dear reader… Got the lower half of the fuselage and the landing gear doors painted.  Then realized something was wrong….. I had reversed the colors.  I have no excuse for missing that earlier.  Oh well….  Time to repaint the top and re-mask the bottom.  This weekend is the first time in about a month I’ll have some time to make some serious progress on this build.

Hasegawa 1/72 F-18A Part 4

I needed to get the canopy masked in preparation for priming. Decided to try Parafilm again to mask the canopy and then carefully cut out the frames.  Took several tries but in the end, I was happy with it. I’ll have to try that technique again. You can find a great tutorial on it from a guest I had on The Scale Model Podcast, Jon Bius.   Primer was then reapplied and then a coat of Tamiya XF-20 Medium Grey with Mr. Color Levelling Thinner was sprayed on the upper half of the aircraft. In addition to masking in prior to spraying the lower half of the kit, here’s a tip I’ve done for a while.  I also spray the landing gear doors prior to putting them on the kit, in many cases, the left and right doors can look very similar, so I put them on a piece of cardboard…

Hasegawa 1/72 F-18A Part 1

It’s been a very busy time with a new contract job and launching The Scale Model Podcast, so it took a while to get back to the bench.  Decided I wanted to do an aircraft again and chose this classic from the stash. As I mentioned in my inbox review of the kit, Hasegawa’s Hornet has been around for quite a while and have more decal options then you can shake a stick at.   The plan is to build this OOB and use one of the kit decal options to make it a CF-18.   First up is the cockpit, which is very basic in nature.  I’m going to try and stick to the ‘three-foot rule’ and not spend a lot of time detailing things up which will never be seen again unless you have a magnifying glass.  The cockpit consists of the floor with side consoles, the seat, stick and instrument panel.  The…
