Taking some time to learn

I’ve got the current projects done and I feel it’s time to take a pause from building/painting new things and up my game. I’ve noticed the last few builds (particularly miniature painting), and although I’m happy with them, I feel I can do better. I’m going to spend the next little while watching some YouTube channels on painting techniques. So far I’ve been binge-watching Artis Opus and finding his dry brushing technique quite amazing.  His videos fully explain how to do it. As dry brushing has always been a weakness of mine this is a technique I do want to improve. I’ve also got some old builds that I’m going to use as paint mules to improve my dry brushing on models as well.   Starting with this older Panzer I’ve had for a few years in the display case.   I’m running short of room so some kits are going to…

Bench Update Oct 11 2021

Quite a lot of progress on the CF-233 build Got the tailplanes on and a major gripe.  There is very little in terms of attachment points to ensure the tailplanes are aligned correctly.  Using my putty of choice, Perfect Plastic Putty from Deluxe Materials does make filling the large gaps a bit easier. I also got the landing gear and landing gear doors primed and the canopy masked. Decided to do it with Micromask as it was a fairly simple mask that had to be done. Priming was done with Stynylrez black primer. The complex curves of the aircraft, particularly on the top fuselage means care has to be taken when painting and priming to ensure the material does end up evenly across everything. Once this was allowed to dry for 24 hours the underside coat of AK Real Color RC252 was applied,  Just before painting one of the tailplanes…

Hasegawa 1/72 F-18A Part 4

I needed to get the canopy masked in preparation for priming. Decided to try Parafilm again to mask the canopy and then carefully cut out the frames.  Took several tries but in the end, I was happy with it. I’ll have to try that technique again. You can find a great tutorial on it from a guest I had on The Scale Model Podcast, Jon Bius.   Primer was then reapplied and then a coat of Tamiya XF-20 Medium Grey with Mr. Color Levelling Thinner was sprayed on the upper half of the aircraft. In addition to masking in prior to spraying the lower half of the kit, here’s a tip I’ve done for a while.  I also spray the landing gear doors prior to putting them on the kit, in many cases, the left and right doors can look very similar, so I put them on a piece of cardboard…
